  1. two heads: superior and inferior
  2. origin:-
    • superior: infratemporal surface of great wing of sphenoid bone.
    • inferior: lateral surface of lateral pterygoid plate.
  3. insertion: both heads fuse into one mass as the fibers from the superior head insert into the capsule onto the anterior surface of the articular disk. The remaining fibers insert below the capsule onto the anterior (medial) surface of the mandibular neck.
  4. actions (2): protraction and jaw opening
